Answer to Question 1

. Nickel may be critical to protein and lipid metabolism and gene expression. It may also influence bone formation. Nickel is found in legumes, nuts, and chocolate.
. Aluminum may be important to reproduction, bone formation, DNA synthesis, and behavior. It is found in many baked goods, grains, some vegetables, tea, and many antacids.
. Silicon is important to bone growth in laboratory animals. Silicon's dietary sources include whole-grain products, and it is also used as a food additive.
. Vanadium influences cell growth and differentiation, and it may affect thyroid hormone metabolism. Dietary sources include mushrooms, shellfish, and black pepper.
. Arsenic may be a cofactor for a variety of enzymes, and may be important to DNA synthesis. Seafood and whole grains are good sources of arsenic.
. Boron is especially important to reproduction in laboratory animals, and its deficiency causes severe fetal malformations. Boron is found in fruits, leafy vegetables, legumes, and nuts.
