Answer to Question 1

Anorexia nervosa (AN): electrolyte imbalances, dehydration, cardiac abnormalities, hair loss, appearance of body hair (lanugo), muscle wasting, and bone loss. Decreased body fat in females can lead to decreased estrogen levels and amenorrhea, further contributing to bone loss. Bulimia nervosa (BN): stomach acid from vomiting damages delicate lining of the esophagus and mouth and dental enamel, causing tooth decay. Frequent vomiting and overuse of laxatives can cause dehydration and electrolyte imbalance. An electrolyte imbalance can lead to an irregular heart beat and sudden cardiac arrest.

Answer to Question 2

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is an irrational fear of gaining weight or becoming obese, causing a turning away from food. There are two types: restricting type and binge-eating/purging type. Bulimia nervosa (BN) is turning to food during times of emotional conflict or stress. There are two types as well: purging type and non-purging type. There are twice as many people with BN as with AN. People with bulimia tend to be above their acceptable weight range with little change in their weight. People with AN become excessively thin and appear gaunt.
