Another nutrient that protects the retina is called zeaxanthin. Lutein and zeaxanthin are collectively known as xanthophylls and can also be found in yellow or orange fruits and vegetables. These nutrients must come from the diet since the body cannot produce them. Beta-carotene, the vitamin A precursor, is also found at low levels in the cells of the retina.
