Achlorhydria, which is decreased production of hydrochloric acid, occurs in aging as well as some medical conditions such as HIV and AIDS. Medications that could affect gastric acidity include H2 blockers, proton-pump inhibitors, and antacids. Gastric emptying rate influences the amount of time in which dissolution can occur; medications that affect gastric emptying time include prokinetics, such as metoclopramide.
