Do you think this patient is malnourished? If so, what criteria can be used to support a diagnosis of malnutrition? Using the guidelines proposed by ASPEN and AND, what type of malnutrition can be suggested as the diagnosis for this patient?

Using the ASPEN and AND proposed criteria, Mrs. Rodriquez appears to have severe malnutrition associated with acute disease. Criteria that support this diagnosis are weight loss >20 (24 loss in 11 months), oral intake <50 of estimated needs.

Answer to Question 2

 Mrs. Hoffman will maintain a stable weight.
 Mrs. Hoffman will utilize her oxygen as prescribed, especially during meals.
 Mrs. Hoffman will rest prior to eating.
 Mrs. Hoffman will express the need to prevent further weight loss.
 Mrs. Hoffman is able to explain the purpose of adequate calorie and protein intakes in her medical care.
 Mrs. Hoffman is able to identify high-calorie foods to incorporate into her daily intake.
 Mrs. Hoffman will consume a minimum of 1600 kcal each day within six small meals.
 Mrs. Hoffman will recognize symptoms that may interfere with her ability to consume meals (e.g. dyspnea, early satiety, fatigue)
 Mrs. Hoffman will obtain help from her husband/daughters to assist her with grocery shopping and meal preparation, as needed.
