Answer to Question 1

IBS, or irritable bowel syndrome, is a functional disorder that involves changes in colon rhythm that result in alternating patterns of diarrhea, constipation, and abdominal pain. The exact cause remains unknown, but stress and certain food sensitivities are among the suspected factors in development of the disorder. Medical management includes dietary modification, stress management, and occasional use of prescription drugs.

Answer to Question 2

Bacteria produce certain vitamins, including biotin and vitamin K. They also ferment undigested and unabsorbed carbohydrates into simpler compounds (including methane gas, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen). Additionally, they break down undigested fiber and produce compounds such as hydrogen and sulfide.
