Answer to Question 1

Excess nutrients, such as fertilizer runoff, can stimulate the growth of some species to the detriment of others, destroying the natural balance of an ocean area. Huge blooms of phytoplankton can choke the gills of some animals and even deplete oxygen in ocean water.

Answer to Question 2

Runoff and discharges from land, and airborne emissions from land, are the largest sources of marine pollution. Examples of ways to reduce this pollution include limiting the emission of carbon dioxide that warms the climate and acidifies the ocean, reducing and recycling plastic waste, reducing the amount of agricultural fertilizer that is able to run off into rivers, and reducing urban and industrial releases into bays.
