When situations are evaluated as harmful or threatening, people take an inventory to see what coping responses they have at their disposal to help them avoid the negative situation. This results in a coping response. Outcomes of coping can be positive or negative, based on many contextual factors. Schooler argued that this perspective is helpful in understanding older adults, who are more prone to social and physical hazards.
