In most molecules, the Lewis dot structure includes bonds that consist of one, two, or three pairs of electrons. The remaining electrons are drawn as lone pairs on one or more atoms. Note that both of these include pairs of electrons. Also most of these atoms obey the octet rule, which means that each atom has eight electrons in its outer shell. The most common exception to the octet rule is hydrogen, which usually has two electrons. Note again that these numbers are all even numbers.
