This decision should be based on several factors, including the child's level of maturity, ability to comply with family rules, previous demonstrations of responsible behavior, and comfort level (with being left alone). Rehearse what ifs (What if someone comes to the door? What would you do if the telephone rings?) with the child to determine whether his or her judgment and responses are appropriate for the circumstances. The child can also be left home alone for brief trial periods, which can gradually be increased in length if the child continues to feel confident.
