Answer to Question 1

The brain regulates the body's intake of fluid by sending a signal that the body needs water. It is much easier for an adult to recognize the signs of being thirsty, and it is more difficult for a young child to express thirst.

Answer to Question 2

Fat is an essential part of promoting brain development and growth in infants and young children. Infants and children younger than two years of age need greater amounts of fat than the guidelines recommend. The AAP and the Dietary Guidelines for Americans both advise against the restriction of fat in the diet for the first two years of life.
