Answer to Question 1

During the absorptive state, under insulin control, the liver takes in glucose and converts it to glycogen, the storage form. In the postabsorptive state, the liver releases glucose into the circulation to maintain homeostasis. The glucose comes from the glycogenolysis or gluconeogenesis. An example of gluconeogenesis is when the liver converts lactate released from skeletal muscle into glucose. Epinephrine, growth hormone, glucagon, glucocorticoids, and other hormones trigger glucose release.
