- paraphilias may come from learning experiences by associating a paraphilic object with masturbation and orgasm
- people with a paraphilias often have cognitive distortions to justify or rationalize their sexual behavior
- cultural factors such as how tolerant a culture is of a particular unusual sexual behavior, like cross- dressing, affects the likelihood of a paraphilic disorder being diagnosed
