Answer to Question 1

The basic process for the Stress Management Exercise 13.1 involves the following steps: (1) tensing a muscle group, (2) holding the tension for a count of five (five seconds), (3) releasing the tension (4) taking a deep abdominal breath, (5) holding it for a count of three (three seconds), then (6) slowly releasing your breath. When tensing one muscle group, remember to keep the others relaxed. This exercise is an abbreviated adaptation of the procedure developed by Charlesworth and Nathan (1985, 2004).

Answer to Question 2

You know you are doing it correctly when your abdomen expands as you take in the initial air followed by your chest expanding as you continue to fill your lungs completely.
