i. A sense of belongingness requires two main features.
1 . First, it requires regular social contacts. These contacts need to be pleasant in nature, not aversive, to promote a sense of belongingness.
2 . Secondly, belongingness requires a stable relationship framework characterized by mutual concern for each other.
ii. A person can have lots of social contact (e.g., telemarketer, prostitute, etc.) but no relationship framework. Alternately, a person might have a strong relationship framework (e.g., commuter marriage) but low social contact. Either of these situations will reduce one's sense of belongingness.
