Answer to Question 1

All of these food safety tests involve two different species of animals, one of which must be a non-rodent. Acute tests are short-term, to discover any immediate effects of the additive. Prolonged tests are for three months. Chronic tests are for one year, which spans three generations, to determine any genetic effects.
