- Saying things the right way; phrases that help and those that don't help
- Don't feel you need to say anything; just being there helps
- Take the initiative; don't just offer help, show up without being asked
- Help with everyday chores
- Listen
- Allow the bereaved to express feelings of guilt; don't say they don't need to feel guilty
- Allow the bereaved to grieve in their own way; don't hurry people along
- Accept mood changes
- For several years, be there on special occasions
- Share your own memories of the person who died
- Understand that the bereaved will always remember their loved one
