Answer to Question 1

ANS: B
The underlying cause of the microvascular and macrovascular diseases is related to hyperglyce-mia, not pancreatic changes, ketone toxicity, or hyperinsulinemia.

Answer to Question 2

ANS: A
Macrovascular disease (lesions in large and medium-sized arteries) increases morbidity and mor-tality and increases risk for accelerated atherosclerosis. Acidosis, rather than alkalosis, would oc-cur in this patient. Neither elevated liver enzymes nor anemia would be expected.
