Answer: (1) Expertise: Task relevant knowledge or experience. (2) Personal attraction: Desirable characteristics associated with friendship. (3) Effort: Higher-than-expected commitment of time. (4) Legitimacy: Behavior consistent with key organizational values. See Table 3. Also, the student should provide appropriate examples for each determinant.

Answer: Personal power represents ways that your personal traits augment your ability to influence others in your organization. They are independent of your job title or organizational level. These determinants include: Expertise, Personal attraction, Effort, and Legitimacy. Position power represents ways that your status in, or connection with, the organization endows you with the ability to influence others. Position power is achieved through exercising skillfull political behavior. The determinants of position power include: Centrality, Flexibility, Visibility, and Relevance.
