Give other people confirmation or validation by acknowledging their presence and indicating acceptance of them and their ideas.

Avoid talking about themselves too much, do not monologue, and try to listen as much as they talk.
Avoid both excessive criticism and undeserved praise in favor of honest appraisals given in a gentle manner.
