Autonomy is the willful release of a limb, especially the tail, as an escape mechanism.

Answer to Question 2

Large tortoises may be tempted by placing a favorite food in front of it; smaller turtles can be gently prodded with blunt forceps in the fleshy part of the rear limb, just beneath the plastron.
