Axid and Carafate both cost about a 1.00 per pill. Add up what this will cost Mrs. CL per day and per month. Mrs. CL is on a fixed income. Discuss what you would do if you had to counsel this patient, knowing that she is going to tell you that she cannot afford the medications.

Answer to Question 1

Carafate is 4x/d = 4.00 and Axid is recommended at 2x/d = 2.00 . Total = 6.00/d. 30 d/mo x 6 = 180.00/month for just two medications.

Answer to Question 2

Completely inhibits the action of histamine at receptor sites of the parietal cells, decreasing gastric acid secretion; no significant nutritional side effects.
