To metabolize toxic chemicals introduced into the body into less active/toxic molecules or into more water-soluble (ionized) molecules that can be excreted more rapidly from the body via the kidneys (although sometimes the metabolites produced may actually become more active or toxic than the parent compound)

First determine the dose that produces a specified or desired effect in 50 of a sample of individuals/animals (ED50) and the dose that produces lethality in 50 of a similar sample of individuals/animals (LD50), and then divide the LD50 by the ED50.
